measures all across this country where everyone has to remain very vigilant but continue to move around and travel and be a democratic society in which we are and do not allow though to shake us but to be aware to where we can move people through the transportation. that's america, we're courageous and continue to do the things we need to do as we look into and they look into what's going on in fort lauderdale and report to the rest of the country and world to what they know to determine the reason for this attack. >> we're following the breaking news a shooting at the ft. lauderdale-hollywood international airport. multiple injured, multiple dead. brooke baldwin follows the

coverage. >> this is cnn breaking news. >> i'm brooke baldwin, thank you for being with me. breaking news here of the shooting of the for the laud -- fort lauderdale international airport. we are told that multiple people are dead and one shooter is in custody. here what looks to maybe be a piece of the airport. we see passengers out on the tarmac lining up. we see an balance there. we know they have been evacuated from specifically terminal 2 being placed on buses to move away from what has been dubbed a crime scene. one passenger getting off a plane said he saw people running

and screaming. all services at the airport have now been suspended. the airport is shut down for the unforseeable future so as we walk through this, let's begin the hour with rene marsh. our cnn aviation correspondence. rene what's going on? >> as you know, there are multiple people dead at the fort lauderdale airport. operations are shut down there. the faa has just put out information that there are significant delays. services are suspended as multiple law enforcement agencies descend on this airport for investigation which is now obviously a criminal investigation. we know that the fbi is in contact with local authorities there. we also know a.t.f. is on its way to this sight as well, but

the lead here is going to be the local authorities, broward county authorities and they are releasing information again that multiple people are dead. there are also several injuries. we know this happened in the baggage claim area of the airport, so in a nonsecure area not near the tsa checkpoint. i want happened in the baggage claim area. terminal 2 and this is usually where delta airlines operates out of. what we still don't know at this hour, brooke is why? why did this individual open fire inside this airport. was this individual targeting anyone in particular? who are the victims here? all of those things, we just simply don't know at this hour, but with this large police presence, that's the top priority for them, brooke. >> rene, stand by. let me bring you in former

homeland security official. when you see all these different people whether it's -- i couldn't quite tell if they were coming off a plane or taken around a terminal outside of the airport, but priority obviously the safety of passengers and airport personnel beyond that, what are they doing right now? >> so there's going to be a well-orchestrated plan for an active shooting at any major airport. the baggage claim is the most vulnerable. i would expect those out on the tarmac came from the main terminal and essentially they were just told to evacuate and sort of break all protocols, all air traffic will be stopped now obviously at fort lauderdale. and right now they are obviously assisting the victims and ensuring that the first responders can help those in immediate need and of course the

investigation is on going. i hate to say this but these things are anticipated by airport personnel, law enforcement state an local so you are seeing the plan unfold. this is actually how it should be working. you want to get the passengers out of the active shooting situation. >> i just got information from the department of homeland security, that at least three have been killed. in baggage claim and the motive is still unknown and you think about everything we go through to get on a plane, but stand by we have boris sanchez at the fort lauderdale international airport, boris tell me what you are seeing. boris, you're live on cnn can you hear me? >> reporter: yeah, we actually are crossing a line of broward

county sheriff's officers, a very large armored vehicle in front of us. there's a heavy heavy police presence as you can imagine, it i appears about a dozen buses off to our left. i've seen several of them piling in. and it appears that there's going to be an evacuation here of folks inside the airport. the traffic outside it is essentially jammed. there's almost no way in the airport. our photographers are trying to get in. as you said, it is a mess here. multiple casualties. police believe there's one shooter, that is obviously in custody. this investigation is going to be a massive one. i've seen people loading cars and being allowed to leave, but can imagine inside the baggage

claim area, there's going to be a screening. the a.t.f. is on the way, i am seeing a large amount of broward county officers. i will note i just saw a flight leaving so it appears they are trying to clear the tarmac, but other than that, no real movement other than the media and the loop outside of the airport. we got word about 1:00 that there were shots fired at terminal 2 here at the airport. and we are literally parking right now outside terminal 2 and i see a couple dozen people standing outside -- i'm trying to figure out exactly what's happening here, but there are several people, dozen people outside of the terminal speaking with law enforcement right now. we're actually being asked to move out of the way. again, a very large police

presence. a very, very disorganized scene from what we have seen so far in terms of people moving bags around everywhere, but it does appear that officials are locking down terminal 2 and trying to get people out with those buses, brooke. i'm going to keep an eye on what's going on. >> i'll let you go, boris and let's figure out 100% where the shooting happened. we had in baggage claim in terminal 2, well get you back when we have that definitively. >> we just noticed to boris's point a plane taking off, i'm also looking at live pictures in an around this airport and it looks jammed. maybe police are stopping folks from going or coming in some of those lanes. >> the fact that the planes are

going or trying to get out of the way would be normal. look, i know this sounds really weird but you can't close a metropolitan airport too long. the way the protocols work is you try to minimize the risk as much as possible but make sure the planes are still flying so people shouldn't be surprised if they see planes coming and going. i would say where this happened and i would say even the casualty report might change other time. that's the nature of breaking news. >> by the way let me jump in and interject speaking of sadly we now have the number up to five. this is according to a number of law enforcement to evan perez. go ahead. >> the number is always lower in the first hour. it may get higher. this is a mass casualty obviously so now the investigation begins. earlier on there was a question about who was in charge unless they actually know who it is one

is going to assume they're going to begin this also as a federal or fbi investigation unless there's a suspect and they know it was something related to a domestic matter. i wouldn't make any judgment right now until we have further -- >> yeah. this is broward county jurisdiction and i think i'm looking at another plane about to take off. we know a.t.f., fbi helping out the broward county, we know it could be a federal investigation. we heard the mayor on with wolf a little bit ago, this is a major airport they're trying to clear out. five planes waiting in line. what's hang within the airport? because i understand some people are still stuck in there? >> yeah, they're going to do a very slow role of evacuation and they want to make sure that

there's no one culpable or guilty amongst those who look like terrified passengers or airport visitors today so they may take their time on the evacuation so people who are in the airport -- this is a time we ask people to be patient regarding this. this will be an investigation that will have a number of tentacles and right now those are beginning. that's going to include surveillance of what or who was approaching the airport. surveillance from days back about whether there was any evidence of stakeouts or views or whatever else occurred and then just a determination of the who, what, when and why. the most important thing is to obviously protect those who are obviously scared an traumatized right now. airports are like my ainicities

you have to make sure that you don't lose evidence, potential criminal -- and so you know that's what this looks like to me, having been very involved with planning and security for airports throughout my career. and that's what this looks like to me. and we'll just wait for the specific facts about what's going on. one other quick thing, this is just the nature of transitions that threats do not take transition hiatus and so one of the major challenges is just simply that the homeland is simply on an undergoing threat and you see why we've been talking about this threat increase depending on the last couple of weeks i know you and i talked about it over the holidays because the threat does

not take a political break. >> no, it doesn't. and hate the look at these pictures of these innocent individuals being wheeled on stretchers to this hospital. juliet, stay with me. >> i will. >> do we have art or rene, guys? >> let me bring in art red rick. i was just handed a diagram of where this shooting happened somewhere around the arrival section of terminal 2. i was in istanbul a day after that attack and it is precisely in the same area, i remember seeing the shattered glass, baggage claim where people can come and go and looks exactly right around the same area. >> reporter: right. you can only push out security so far. there's always going to be a soft under-belly somewhere, and

as we know anybody that travels anywhere in the u.s. that is an area completely unsecure and it is a soft target. when i first heard about this the first thing was domestic, the reports initially were nine people were shot, i think i've seen upwards of five people killed. >> it's five dead by the way, art, five dead and eight injured being taken to the hospital. please continue. >> reporter: yeah, they have got to get to the motive really quick on this, because if this is anywhere related to terrorism then obviously reports need to go out to all airports in the country and the same loop, is he inspired, directed or just a psychopath with a handgun or a rifle? >> right. >> reporter: so the motive is to

get to that as quick as we can. >> art, stay with me. evan perez is with us to connect some of the dots. what are you learning? >> reporter: the question of whether it's terrorism or not is at the top of everybody's minds. i think some of the witness accounts so far have not indicated the shooter said anything, made any kinds of statements. that's usually one of the first things you hear. in this case that's not something we have heard and something law enforcement is looking at right now. the fact that the alleged shooter is in custody is a big plus because obviously they can at least once he's treated for his wounds he can be interviewed and try to figure out what was the motivation here. >> do we know if he was wounded? >> reporter: yes, well, he was shot and then taken into custody. i'm not sure what the extent of his injuries were, but as soon

as they can try to treat that and make sure he is okay, they can start interviewing him and try to determine what the motivation was. again, at this point no motive known yet. nothing he said from witnesses that have talked to law enforcement nothing has stuck out as terrorism, but that's usually one of the first places you want to go. the a.t.f. as well as the fbi is there helping the broward county sheriff's who are responsible for the scene right there. and obviously this was something so scary for the people working and in the area, they moved them on to the tarmac to get them out of harm's way, you don't know how far they will go, if there might be additional people. we now know that the shooter in

custody and right now unfortunately we are told as many as five people were killed in this shooting, brooke. >> help us understand, evan, of course once the shooter is in a position where he can physically talk and hopefully start helping out law enforcement understanding why, beyond that, what are some of the other pieces of evidence where law enforcement can connect the dots and understand what happened today? >> reporter: well, you know, one of the more interesting things that happens in situations like this is that people flee, right, they might leave behind their belongings, purse and identification and so on and so that's one of the first pieces of evidence they're looking at. we know that the authorities are looking at a possible i.d. of the suspect but we don't know yet whether or not it is the true i.d. of that person so it's the simple things like that that

law enforcement needs to go through methodically, who he is, if he is who he says he is and that takes more time and makes it more complicated that's a scene by nature chaotic as people just leave belongings left behind as they flee for their lives, they make it difficult to processi. we have seen where the identification of the suspect is incorrectly identified because of all of the belongings left behind. >> as planes are beginning to take off that area terminal 2 where the shooting happened is

considered an active crime scene, what is happening right now? >> reporter: we au everybosaw e out on the tarmac and they need to clear and get everybody outside and recheck them through security, so we have seen this happen add a couple other airports. you're going to go to the safest place in this particular location, and although the shooting happened in the baggage area everybody was scrambling to get to the other side and scrambled on to the tarmac which appeared to be the safest place, so they have to bring them back in, and determine whether they're going to go back again. i don't think this particular terminal will be open any time soon. it is an active crime scene as you said and they have got a lot more investigation that they have got to do, look for the

vehicle he arrived in, did he arrive in a cab, video cct to check, then once his identification is found they'll start going through his personal information to try to see if there's any connection at all to this particular crime. >> evan, do we still have you, i have one quick follow-up? >> reporter: yes. >> did the shooting happen in baggage claim at the arrival area above, was it inside, outside? i don't think we're clear on that yet. >> reporter: again, because of the nature of these scenes it's very chaotic, we heard it was in the unsecured area, in other words the area outside of security, might have been the baggage claim area, and i've been to this area and the lower area is where you get your

luggage and the departure is where you would get your ticket and go through security, the lower level is where you have the -- you have got your luggage and also get to taxis and buses and so on that are picking passengers up. that serves delta, air canada, so you have a lot of tourists coming in. it's obviously high season for fort lauderdale. this is a big day for travel, cruise ships coming in and out of that port so one of the difficulties of this is figuring out what you're dealing with and we're not sure if it was on the lower level or upper level. we were told it was in the baggage claim area, but again, that's something we need to check out. >> are an unsecured area. >> rene marsh is with us, do you have a sense whether or not people are being allowed out of

the airport. we have seen planes take off, what do you know? >> reporter: i just heard at this hour they're in the process of allowing people back into the airport an re-screening passengers, that again is coming from tsa. what they have to do is identify who were the passengers they need to keep aside because they have critical information to the investigation, but the passengers who did not see any of this, i'm told at this hour are being re-screened at this point, brooke. >> so did they take everyone who was inside the airport at the time of shooting and have them leave, go back around the front and be rescreened? >> our understanding is that terminal 2 was evacuated so if you were in another terminal and perhaps you were not impacted by this shooting, you may not have been evacuated from your

terminal, however, i would imagine that traffic was not allowed to come in and out of the airport at a certain point as well. >> sure. >> reporter: you have roadways leading into the airport, so i would imagine that was blocked off but the real focus here is specifically on terminal 2 where this shooting occurred. >> got it. if you are just joining us, to bring you up to speed, there's been a shooting somewhere around the either the arrival area upstairs or downstairs in the baggage claim, it's in an unsecured area where there are no metal detectors. we do know that five people are confirmed dead. eight people injured. we have seen some planes that have been taking off.

this is a pretty major airport there in southern florida so that's what we are getting a sense of. i have a couple of voices with me including harry hall k. . what's your assessment on this? >> first. we have five people shot. >> five killed. >> five killed. >> and apparently the shooter has been shot. >> right. >> and in custody. >> and take a look. they said this might be the baggage area, so we know it's nobody coming off. >> there's people rubbing on that screen. how long was that from, control room? >> this is live. this is live what's happening on the big screen as you are seeing folks running out of what could be a terminal there in the airport. i have no idea what's going on. >> it's really hard to see what's going on. >> it's frightening. >> we don't have any video of

what occurred. >> if this is in the baggage area, which is pretty easy to get to -- >> a very unsecure area. >> how did the shooter arrive, we know he didn't come off a plane. >> do we know that? >> well, let's play the odds here, the shooter probably didn't have a gun on the plane. >> okay. >> but that's what i like to do when i'm doing an analysis. what do we really have that we're looking at and if he did arrive did he park in an area or park as if he was hanging up. >> hang on. we have a witness on the phone one of these individuals running right now. it's brooke, can you hear me? >> hi, yes. >> can you tell me what's going on? >> it's kind of a mess right now.

honestly we got back inside like half an hour ago. and something happened while i was on the phone waiting to chat with you. everybody sprinted outside again. and so we just ran out again. and we're back out on to the tarmac. i honestly don't know what's happening. but this is round two. >> catch your breath for me and let me just ask if you were all let back inside the airport, what was that something that happened? did you hear some sort of explosion. what led you to run? >> the second time or the first? >> i know what happened the first time. there was a shooting. the second time what happened? >> the second time we just saw people running and security running again and telling us to run outside and i think people are just freaked out right now. so i don't even know if anything actually -- i don't know, but people are scared.

and they just started running, so everyone is running now. >> where are you right now? >> we're out on the tarmac. uh, we're just outside now again. >> how many people are around you juda? >> uh, right now a couple hundred people are out an more people are filing out, rushing out again. people are still running out. on to the tarmac. >> the fact that we saw them going back in the term nam we're think -- terminal we're thinking it's safe. how do we know they cleared the area. >> juda, where were you being kept inside the airport? >> we were at our gate. there were guards, military guards with guns and everything doing a sweep. everything looked like it was coming down. and then this happened again.

so i'm too close to it, i can't tell what's going on. >> i understand. and listen, i would be freaked out too, i can't imagine witnessing a shooting and then being kept at an airport. where were you when the shooting happened, judah? were you inside. ? >> yeah, we were in the gate, but it is close to where the airport is, a smaller one, so the baggage claim is really not that far from where our gate was. so the woman next to me actually running out saw the shooter an actually saw him pull the gun. she ran outside with us, so she was freaking out. and completely understand. but i'm just glad my wife and daughter are okay. so i'm sure everybody is just

worried. so. >> i'm glad you are okay an your wife and daughter, but hang on a second so if you were sitting close to the baggage claim area did you hear the pop pop

i want to tell our viewers, these are live pictures. being totally transparent. i don't know what's going on. this is some kind of comotion on the tarmac. passengers are rushing around to address whatever is happening. this is all part of this group including judah who heard something happen within inside of the airport for them to rush out again. judah, i have one more question are you still with me? >> yes. >> did the woman describe the gun? >> no, we got there, got inside, sat down for five minutes and she was crying and telling us her story, but didn't get very much. she was right there. and she heard three shots before

she ran off. that was her -- what i heard from her, but now we're running away on the tarmac again. >> did you hear -- did she say whether the shooter said or shouted anything? >> no. no. nothing was confirmed on that. >> do you see her by any chance? is she still around? >> no, everyone is -- everyone ran in different directions. everyone is kind of panicked right now. even ran in different directions. okay. you know what, this is kind of crazy. >> get off the phone with me judah and take care of your wife and child. >> you can see from the right side here people sitting behind something being covered from i guess potential gunfire, so it looks like there's still

potential threat there. he was asked whether or not he heard more shots and he said he heard shots. you always got to go on the fact that there might be another shooter. >> when he said there was something he just saw people running, he heard the shots initially, he was sitting in the gate and then i have been was escorted back ind siside and pe saw or heard something and started running, and so why that group of people are hunched behind that truck is still a mystery. >> people working at the airport are probably getting information and on walky talkies and you can see another video people just

standing around there. i guess it's been declared pretty safe from any potential gunfire or anything like that. >> i am getting a text as i'm listening to you someone from my high school in atlanta, apparently a college counselor saved by his laptop. i'm staring at this picture of the bullet in his laptop. my goodness. if you are just joining us there was a shooting at the fort lauderdale international airport within the last hour. it happened some where around either the upstairs rival area or baggage claim area sounds like an unsecure area, according to law enforcement, they believed it was one individual, he is in custody, he's been wounded and was shot. you know police are going to have many, many questions for

him as far as why. . the mayor is with me now. what do you make of this. >> this is horrible. this is a disaster. our thoughts go out to the families of these tragic victims. >> of course. >> and this is a situation clearly across the country, people are experiencing these types of situations and i spoke at the -- international airport and they expect to have more passengers coming through, because fort lauderdale international airport is closed right now. >> more running, more running on the tarmac. it's frightening, the question mark when you tell everyone you think it's okay and when you see

people panicked. boris sanchez is on scene. why are you running? what's going on? >> reporter: brooke. the short answer is we have no idea. what we are watching right now is police screening a parking garage across the street from terminal 2. what you are seeing right now are officers going floor by floor scanning that area. this all happened about ten minutes ago. we heard people screaming and turned around to terminal 2. just down the street over there. this is terminal 2 on the second floor. on the lower floor is where the shooting took place. there was a huge amount of people outside the door and a short while ago there was screaming an to shouting an we looked over and there were at least half a dozen officers with long guns started running in that direction. since then we started hearing people screaming on the tarmac.

if we get closer you can see people evacuating on to the runways right now. we started seeing people here in this area to my left just start running and screaming and shouting. again, we don't know exactly why. a short while later we heard the same thing from terminal 1. there's panic an confusion and as i said there was more screaming where this screening is underway. we don't know the situation right now but there are 100s of people spread across this airport asking us what is happening. they are clearly confused and frightened. i've seen several people crying, shaking just trying to get out of this area. it is extremely difficult because there's traffic everywhere trying to get in and out of this airport. again this all started at 1:00 the report of shots fired. in the building behind me terminal 2 in the baggage claim,

multiple casualties. at least eight people taken to as we start watching more people running. people are running away with -- >> what is going on? >> if you look over to my right. you see down here. this officer is evacuating people from the first floor and brooke, as i said before there's panic an confusion and we're not sure what we are witnessing here. if this is perhaps more of what we saw earlier in the baggage claim area or if this is perhaps just security trying to sweep the area and people becoming panicked seeing these officers moving in with long weapons, but again there's panic an confusion and this is going to take quite a long time to clean up and figure out, brooke. >> let me stay with you, boris. as we'll talk to my legal law enforcement guys to my right who are all saying it seems

disorganized. show me around. where this happened? because that seems to be a point of confusion. >> reporter: right. let's come this way. this is the second terminal at fort lauderdale international airport. it has two levels. the one we're on now is for departures the lower are for rivals. the baggage claim of this terminal. and again when we got here a short while ago there were several dozen people outside appear to be speaking to law enforcement. there was confusion, we had to make another loop around the airport and we had no real idea of who -- of again where you could an couldn't go. in other words where this investigation was unfolding. it appeared they were starting to evacuate people from other terminals. there were buses lined up, but

about 15 minutes ago we saw that crowd over there disperse completely. there were at least as i said a half a dozen heavily armed officers running in that direction to the other terminals. the airport forms a loop so appears they were returning to the other terminals. a short while ago we heard shouting. it's unclear if it was inside that parking garage, but there were officers going floor to floor armed scanning an screening that area an we just saw moments ago people on the lower floor running an saw people again close to the boarding areas start running toward the tarmac and not really sure where they have gone. the people on the other side of the airport have run that far away. and again this is where people were huddled moments ago an officers were getting them out of the way. they are now hiding behind cars

and we don't know what's going on but it is chaos and confusion. >> is there any way to grab people on the fly, i don't know if they are passengers or folks waiting for people to grab someone to speak with while we're live on cnn? >> sure, would you mind telling us where you're going? >> my family is in terminal 2, i was kind of waiting between terminal one and the rental car place. everybody started running out of terminal 1 out of the rental car place. some lady was runniscreaming fop and so i started running an here i am. >> reporter: what time? >> probably about 12:30. >> i was returning the rental car and my family said stay there because they were putting everybody in a safe place. my 90 yearly grandma is in

there, she ran. >> reporter: have you heard from them? >> yeah, they're fine in delta staff lounge. >> reporter: [ inaudible ] >> back to michigan. >> reporter: you heard there were several other families stranded as fort lauderdale closed operations. we're going to try to get to what's going on here. >> thank you to you and your crew. >> what do you make of this? people running an running. what's going on? >> law enforcement has shown up to an active scene and they're going to a protocol for an active shooter, one to stop an active shooter and two provide security. >> the crisis communication is really falling apart here.

to see that much confusion on the airside which is supposed to be the secure side which is where the planes are is absolutely amazing to me. people are dispersing in all locations. again the airport authority is not controlling that on both sides. law enforcement is showing up to put the threat down. other organizations there are there are supposed to work in tandem to that to get the public away from the threat. here there was a threat yards away and people are siding on the sidewalk. -- sitting on the sidewalk. that makes no sense. >> you took the words right out of my mouth. the fact we saw all these people are running, if you're in the airport and there's no direction you're going to take off, go in any direction you can. beyond security, and you heard gunshots and something is going on if they're not directing you where to go you're going to run

right out to the tarmac. they should have protocols. and this is not on the police. the police are there for one reason only, to get rid of the threat and secure the location. this is in the event something like this happens, where are the people going to go? there ain't going to be no more flights taking out of this airport. there were people that probably haven't even been checked. when this is all over, everybody is going to have to come back and go through security to be able to take out of that airport. there's a lot of confusion, no direction. you can see some people running this way and running that way. who is directing them. >> i've got senator bill nelson joining me. senator nelson it's a tragedy, at least five lives lost and at

least eight injured. your thoughts? >> i just got off the phone with the head of tsa. five deaths that we know of. the shooter is estabon santiago. he had a military i.d., we don't know if it is current, but every time you get a bunch of people like at baggage claim or like outside of tsa where you're going to security or lines at the ticket counter, it's a soft target and the best deterrence is the dog, those dog teams after the german shooting a year ago, we doubled those dog teams. but they take a long time to train, they're expensive.

the problem is you can't have enough dog teams for all the airports and all the crowds that we have. >> senator, hang on let me go back two thoughts. this is the first time we have heard a name of a shooter. you got the name from the head of the tsa. >> correct. >> it's the name of estabon santiago. >> correct, but we don't know about the accuracy of the i.d. they were pretty sure of his name, but as to the authenticity of the military i.d., we don't know that. >> i understand, and senator do you have a better understanding of how this unfolded, where this estabon santiago was when he

pulled the gun out? >> brooke you guys are doing a great job, showing everything live. you're on top of it. they have him in custody so we will have a full report. the stuff that's being reported now is that people are panicked that there might be other shooters at the airport. you would be more up to date on that. i'm here at washington in the capitol. >> i i understand. i understand. let me ask you from the great state of florida and looking at this unfold down in fort lauderdale and we heard from a woman who is waiting for her 90-year-old grandmother who is huddle down inside a terminal. what do you have to say to these people. >> they need to stay in place and they have got the fbi, all

levels of law enforcement there, so i'm sure they're going to be okay. let me just say that we're pretty sensitized in florida to guns and tragedy because as you remember the tragedy of the pulse nightclub. and it's interesting because just today i'm filing a bill that would have caught that shooter, mateen, when he had gone to purchase that high-caliber rapid fire weapon because he had previously been on the terrorist watch list. i hope we can get some common sense and get that passed. >> i want to let you go, senator nelson, but one final quick question as we are looking, i don't know if you have seen this, but all these passengers

gunshots in the parking garage, for security purposes they are sweeping the area to make sure that's not the case, so the activity that you are seeing right now is a result of them sweeping the area to make sure everything is clear but at this point we do not have a confirmation as tony oth any ot shooting going on at the airport. >> someone heard something sounding like gunshots, so why were the passengers running out like darts when this apparently happened. is this a concern? >> no, we have a very organized method we are using to sweep the airport and make sure that all terminals and all passengers are safe and that the airport is clean, but you do understand that we have had passengers that were existing in other terminals

and in terminal 2 when all of this occurred. our job right now is to safely move those passengers from one area and get them as safe as possible to other terminals and into other areas so part of this training we have and part of the operations include having them move in an orderly fashion and evacuate through an emergency process to make sure that we clear all passengers and keep them safe, so yes, it is very organized ever law enforcement personnel on scene and move passengers as quickly as we can to clear the airport. >> are all these passengers then returning around to the front of the airport and being re-screened and getting on planes when and if the airport re-opens? >> the airport at this time is not reopening. we are screening them an moving

them to safe areas as a precaution tand as soon as we cn get those persons in our airport that were existing cleared out, we will then do another sweep of the airport and then possibly reopen the airport, but that will not occur for several hours. we are telling passengers to remain calm and expect delays. >> i did see some planes taking off. are those the planes waiting at the gates? >> correct. yes. we are moving the passengers as quickly as we can, those that have already been screened in other terminals or in terminal 2 we are getting those passengers moved as quickly as possible out and investigate this crime scene. >> just to be crystal clear it's your best understanding from law enforcement there was one shooter and one shooter only and that individual is in custody?

>> that is correct. and the number of confirmed dead is five. and the number of people we have transported to area hospitals are 13 and so i'm giving that update, a confirmation of five dead, and eight transferred to hospitals as a result of the shooting. we are in an organized manner, emptying our airport and securing the area to make sure there is no further threat. >> thank you mayor sharief at the fort lauderdale international airport. >> thoughts? >> i'm not going to point fingers at people here, but the fact is that when you have an incident like this and you have people running out on the tarmac you have to have people trained out there on the tarmac which are moving planes around and

shots. >> that explains why people are running. >> it's easy to comment on a dynamic situation, but what we see here is people potentially running into danger. we don't know if there could be secondary attacks coming in from the other side. you have massive amounts of people coming out on to the tarmac. to me that could be a secondary potential target. that's something now that law enforcement needs to be concerned with. looking at best practices, there are lockdown procedures that should be in place for situations like that going on right now and it appears that a lot of those things weren't followed. >> let me jump back to the airport. boris sanchez is our correspondent there near where the shooting had taken place.

boris what have you learned since we last talked? >> reporter: brooke, it is still a fluid situation. we have not been able to get -- speak to us here on the ground, but they appear to be done with the sweep of the parking garage we were just showing you across from the runway. but as you look forward the runway you can see the evacuations are still underway, there are hundreds of people walking across the tarmac and other to hangars on the other side and still people on the lower level huddled together. moments ago there was a family i saw laying on the ground. still very frightened by what they had seen. a few moments ago there were screaming and officers with very large weapons. we didn't know what was going on, things appear to have calmed down since then. there were reports of another

unconfirmed shooting. it's unclear whether that was as a result of people panicking and running when they saw these officers being mobilized. but it was chaos, people running in all different directions, i saw people hiding behind columns, thinking things were happening behind them. again. this all started about 1:00 where in the baggage claim area at the delta claim area, that there was a report of shots fired. there were several casualties and since then it's just been a mess. we now the broward county sheriff's office is here in force. we have several other helicopters in the air right now, but there's no real organization that i can see in terms of what's happening on the

level that we are on. there were a couple people huddled together just outside of terminal 2. again, the upper level of where that shooting happened. they were talking to law enforcement and then the officers started running across the way. it appears a loop at the airport and appears they were running to perhaps another terminal. we don't know. but we know that governor of florida rick scott is on the way. and hopefully we will get a picture of what has happened but more importantly what's happening right now that are stranded here at fort lauderdale national airport. >> these are live pictures so fort lauderdale police, broward county sheriff's department is there, fbi, a.t.f. being dispatched to help. they have quarantined off this

five people dead, eight people rush today ted to the hospitals. this happened in the baggage claim area of terminal 2. the issue is why this happened? they're trying to get to the motive of that. at some point we'll be able to talk to the suspect. the shooter who is in custody is alive and in custody. again five dead, 13 injured. all of this unfolding at fort lauderdale. the interesting piece though is it wasn't just over after that. we have seen a bit of chaos and
